Summary of the experiences and competences of Katerina

I am a senior researcher at the Institute of Nanomaterials, Advanced Technologies and Innovation, Department of Applied Biology, where I focus on the problematics of geomicrobiology. My major interest is in the nuclear waste disposal and the effects, that can microorganisms cause in geological repositories. One of the most studied (and unwanted) effects is the corrosion of metal canisters for spent fuel, where MIC can play a very important role. But I also deal with microbial activity in bentonite (sealing clay material) or underground water and any microbial processes ongoing deep underground.

Our institute contains well-equipped laboratories and we are involved in several projects connected to nuclear waste repositories, but also contaminated sites remediations, waste-water treatments, etc. We also develop and test approaches based on nanotechnology.
