Karel is a member within the Euro-MIC COST framework. This project is funded by the European Union and enables scientists to bridge knowledge and capabilities across countries and disciplines.

Summary of the experiences and competences of Karel

Dr. Karel Folens studied chemistry at the Catholic University of Leuven and obtained his PhD on “the impact of speciation on metal recovery from wastewaters” at Ghent University. Currently, Karel is postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology and studies interactions of metals with natural materials, bio-polymers and microorganisms in an environmental and industrial context. The lab is specialized in microbial community management for environmental and industrial projects, including (electro-)chemical water engineering and resource recovery. His research let to more than 30 scientific publications in the field of bio-metallurgy.

Looking for help? Karel can help you with the following items

The Center for Microbial Ecology and Technology (CMET) of Ghent University is specialized in advanced molecular techniques for microbial analysis. It hosts qPCR, next-generation sequencing and flow cytometry analytics for the thorough characterization of bacterial communities and engineering innovative solutions in the field of, amongst others, drinking and waste water treatment systems. The research group is capable to analyze fundamental microbial processes and link bio-chemical data involved in MIC.
