Information from Mario
Mario is a member within the Euro-MIC COST framework. This project is funded by the European Union and enables scientists to bridge knowledge and capabilities across countries and disciplines.
Summary of the experiences and competences of Mario
I am a professor at the Department of Chemistry at the South-West University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, where I give lectures on general and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and electrochemistry. I am also a deputy dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and head of the Innovative Center for Eco-Energy Technologies (ICEET) at the same university. Since 2007, together with Prof. DSc Yolina Hubenova from the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, we have developed a new scientific direction for Bulgaria related to bioelectrochemical systems using microorganisms as biocatalysts. Our research group is currently involved in several infrastructural and research projects, in which our role is to develop and test new types of microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells for various applications. The similarity of extracellular electron transfer mechanisms in microbial electrochemical technologies and MIC motivated us to participate in the Euro-MIC COST project.
Looking for help? Mario can help you with the following items
My competence is mainly in the field of electrochemistry and more deeply in development and characterization of new electrode materials, modification with different electrocatalysts, construction and testing of new (bio)electrochemical devices. Within ICEET, we have built a specialized laboratory for bioelectrochemical systems equipped with the necessary equipment for conducting interdisciplinary research. A new molecular biology laboratory is under construction.
